DiRoNA "Award of Excellence" Florida Trend Magazines "Golden Spoon 'Hall of Fame'" Wine Spectators "Award of Excellence" America's Top 200 "Most Romantic Dining by Candlelight" Gourmet Magazine..."Unconventional and Delicious" Chef Raymond honored as Guest Chef for 2005 Thanksgiving at James Beard House Nestled in a tropical paradise along Gulf of Mexico Drive is a very quaint two-story Florida Cottage. Candlelit tables positioned along a wall of glass capture the beauty of a peaceful park-like setting. Warm banana-nut bread and creamy butter baited our appetites as we perused the menu and the featured daily offerings. The Veal Medallion Special with morel mushrooms captured my interest... Their steaks are the best! The Filet Mignon Fritzie is my favorite. A charbroiled 8-oz. center cut beef filet served on a potato pancake with caramelized shallots, mushrooms and bourbon demi-glace. Another popular steak entrée is Euphemia's Prime Peppered Steak. A trimmed boneless strip steak rolled in cracked peppercorns pan-fried and served with a hot and sweet, orange brandy butter sauce. My husband and I adore their Roast Duckling! A crispy half duck partially boned then stuffed with a walnut sage dressing. Chef/Owner Ray Arpke then whips up a masterful sauce that changes nightly. We began with one of our favorites...the Sweet n' Spicy Shrimp appetizer. Four Jumbo Gulf Shrimp, lightly seasoned with Cajun spices, char-grilled to perfection, then served with a tantalizing honey mustard sauce. These succulent morsels had our taste buds begging for more! The waiter then returned with cups of the soup du jour, Chicken Cream, featuring a FABULOUS hint of wild mushrooms amidst succulent meaty morsels! Served with chilled fork, I continued with a refreshing salad of chopped Arugula and Spinach topped with grape tomatoes, slivers of red onion, gorgonzola and pine nuts with balsamic and olive oil. Although the Classic Caesar Salad (for two or more) is the house specialty, I've also enjoyed the Nouveau Waldorf. This is not your "traditional" green salad, but thin slices of sweet seasonal pears fanned and topped with candied pecans, Gorgonzola crumbles and drizzle of red wine vinaigrette. Exceptional. As for the entrées...I selected the Roast Duckling with a tantalizing Pecan Apricot glaze that blended beautifully with the homemade bread stuffing. My spouse chose the Veal Medallion special with wild mushrooms in a sauce of Sherry and butter that was truly OUTSTANDING!!! We GREEDILY shared an order of the potatoes du jour, featuring russets, cabbage and onion with butter and cream. Yes, it was worth every calorie!!! If you're counting carbs yet want those spuds...They feature a Carb- alternative of mashed Cauliflower, roasted garlic, parmesan and olive oil that's excellent! Chef Arpke has recently written a book called "You Don't have to be Crazy, But it Helps" recounting his remarkable life and culinary secrets. Be sure to click on their web site for on-line ordering. Desserts and coffee are best upstairs in the Haye Loft; a place where one can relax in overstuffed sofas and chairs and listen to soothing jazz. On this evening a classical guitarist was playing some romantic mellow tunes. Light meals and munchies are also available and served in cozy spots throughout the loft.
