While on vacation, there comes a time when good and simple Home Cooking is required!
Look no further than the Avenue of the Flowers Shopping Center on Longboat Key. A raised patio with umbrella covered tables is perfect for a sunny afternoon or balmy evening, while the interior features cozy booths, tables and "Hollywood"/Ringling memorabilia.
The menu provides typical breakfast and deli fare like eggs, omelets, pancakes, cereals, freshly baked bagels, mounds of cold cuts on excellent homemade" breads and homemade soups and salads. Even hand tossed pizzas.
Yes, they have everything you'd normally find in a deli... but BETTER! Their specialty sandwiches are... "To Die For"!
How about the Edward G. Robinson? Corned Beef piled high on a hot, crispy split Potato Latke with applesauce or sour cream. WOW! Not long ago, two men in our party ordered the Marlene Dietrich. Tender corned beef piled high with sauerkraut and Swiss cheese, grilled to a golden brown on "homemade" rye bread. SPECTACULAR!
Imagine…..barely fitting your mouth around thick slices of rye that simply melt into mounds of smooth savory, good chopped liver. I guarantee… if you're a chopped liver lover, DON'T miss it. It's the Best!
It even beats Paul Newman's old hangout, Gold's Deli in Westport, Connecticut.
After 5:00 p.m. entrees of stuffed cabbage or peppers, hot roast beef or turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes and gravy, French Dip and Meat Loaf are definite crowd pleasers. I've enjoyed their "Chicken in a pot" with Matzo ball, Kreplach, carrots and celery in a flavorful broth. But...My favorite is… the half Rotisserie Chicken served with mashed potatoes and mixed veggies. It's Meaty, succulent and down right better than Mom's! All dinners include a choice of soup, salad or coleslaw with potato and vegetable of the day.
Children, 9 and under, for just a pittance, are provided their own breakfast offerings of egg with toast, French Toast or Pancake with ham, bacon or sausage. While lunch or dinner consists of a PB&J, Kosher Frank, Hamburger or Grilled Cheese with fries.
A beautiful morning beckoned us to Longboat Key for a hearty breakfast and a day at the beach. Although we had never ordered breakfast here…we decided to stick with our usual when ordering out…omelets, bacon and toast.
Well, were we ever surprised!!! Nosh-a-Rye has always exceeded New York Deli fare but… when it comes to breakfast…they are exceptional with omelets!
I feasted on a tomato, Swiss and mushroom while my leading man had his ham and cheese. They were light, fluffy… with fillings of fresh veggies, meat and oozing cheese accompanied by thick slabs of honey cured bacon, “homemade” rye toast and jam.
We’ve sampled many a breakfast location and without a doubt, this is… THE BEST… for omelets!
And, don’t forget…You can’t go wrong with lunch or dinner
There are wonderful cookies, pies, pastries and ice creams to think about as well!
So, If you’re headed to Mote Marine, Pelican Man’s Bird Sanctuary, The Sarasota Bay Explorer or you just want to head out and get some good “comfort” food, be sure to grab a bite or two at Nosh-A-Rye.
I promise...you won′t regret it!
